Artist Statement

I am a passionate collector, a finder of natural treasures and beautifully crafted objects that have been forgotten, overlooked, or cast aside. I analyze and evaluate. How does this speak to me? Can I cleverly incorporate its essence, or the object itself, into my art?

From the breathtaking colors of an Arizona sunset to the muted shades of vintage materials, my art is influenced by textures and patterns from the natural world, ancient symbols, all things music, and the magical colors of the Desert Southwest.  As my art evolves, I find that it becomes easier to explore different media, materials, and techniques.

Art has become the expressive focus of my life, filling me with the power of imaginative thinking. Whether starting with a fully formed vision, or a concept, a few simple marks, perhaps a color combination I wish to explore, my work evolves until it feels right - complete, balanced, conceivably intriguing to the viewer. I am driven by the excitement of creating something of substance, of value, from a blank substrate. No rules. No restrictions. Pure creativity.

Cheryl Goodberg is known for her award winning collages made from artist painted papers, vintage materials, botanical elements, including found and recycled components. A conservatory trained percussionist, she brings to art the discipline and sensitivity from her musical training. Cheryl has expanded her art practice into intuitive painting, assemblage, and photography.

Cheryl received applied art training at The Drawing Studio, The Art Institute of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and in studio with Deanna Thibault. Influential teachers include Jane Davies, Stan Kurth, Laura Lein-Svencner, and Nicholas Wilton. She has served as a docent with the University of Arizona Museum of Art.

Her work has been shown locally with PaperWorks - The Sonoran Collective for Paper and Book Artists, Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild, Contemporary Artists of Southern Arizona, and nationally with the National Collage Society and the Bauhaus Prairie Art Gallery.
